Officials have warned that commuters to New York City could face crowded and delayed trains Monday morning, although the Metropolitan Transit Authority, or MTA, which oversees the Metro-North line, is offering alternate transport for people affected by Sunday’s train derailment in the Bronx.

Four people were killed and dozens more injured on Sunday, when a Metro-North train carrying about 120 passengers derailed on the Hudson Line just north of the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, toppling seven cars including the locomotive. Federal authorities have launched a probe into the accident, and a team of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board has begun documenting the scene. The investigators expect their work at the accident site to take a week to 10 days, and restoration of the service in the line could take longer.

"I think it's fair to say that tomorrow, people who use this line should plan on a long commute or plan on using the Harlem line,'' Andrew Cuomo Governor of New York said, at a news conference Sunday, USA Today reported.

MTA also has warned that more than 26,000 commuters using the Hudson Line on an average weekday should expect “crowded trains,” and advised travelers “to ride the Harlem Line as an alternative.”

MTA, in a statement posted on their website, provided the following information:

Beginning at 5 a.m. Monday, MTA Bus will provide a bus shuttle between Yonkers Station and the 242nd Street terminus of the Broadway local subway, until further notice.

New York City Subways will operate two additional local trains per hour during peak periods.

Hudson Line Tickets will be Cross Honored on Subway and Harlem Line.

Special parking is being arranged to accommodate additional drivers at the Southeast Station at the northern terminus of the Harlem line and at Kensico Dam, which is in walking distance to the Valhalla station.

Monday, Hudson Line commuters will be able to park for free at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, which is walking distance to the Valhalla station.

Metro-North Railroad will continue to provide bus service from the Tarrytown Station to the White Plains Station on the Harlem Line until 2 a.m. Monday.

People who do not have to travel are urged to telecommute.

Riders should consult mta.info for additional information on the continuing repair effort and service restoration.
