Tablet thinness factor, a new parameter to judge the tablets, was introduced by Apple earlier this month when it launched its ultra thin tablet iPad 2.

Apple gave new meaning to the word thin when it launched the iPad 2 with an 8.8mm (0.34 inch) thick frame weighing a mere 601 gm (1.32 pounds).

However, Apple will have to part with its 'thinnest tablet' title as Samsung just delivered two new thinner and lighter versions of Android 3.0 tablets. Samsung followed Apple's thinner, lighter and faster mantra to introduce a 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch Galaxy Tabs which are 8.6mm (0.33-inch) thin.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 weighs 595gm (1.31 pounds) and Galaxy Tab 8.9 weighs 470gm (1.03 pounds). The Android 3.0 tablets at the CES 2011 brought the specifications war to the table but the new tablet war seems to be about thinness and weight.

The top tablets -besides Samsung Galaxy Tab and Apple iPad - in the race to capture the market are Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer, RIM PlayBook, HP TouchPad and Dell Streak.

Here is a slideshow of the thinnest tablets of the above lot:
