“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland skipped the 2017 SAG Awards due to health reasons.

The actress was supposed to attend the event with her co-stars from the hit ABC sitcom, which was nominated in the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series category. However, hours before the awards night, Hyland posted a photo of herself with boyfriend Dom Sherwood kissing from last year’s SAG Awards and told her fans that she won’t make it this year.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hyland suffered kidney dysplasia and underwent surgery in April 2012.

In an interview with Seventeen three years later, Hyland opened up about her serious condition and shared that she was born with several health conditions. “I was born with so many health issues that doctors told my mother I would never have a normal life. And she said, ‘You’re right, she won’t – but it won’t be because of her health. When my mother told me that story, it resonated with me. If I can’t have an ordinary life, I might as well have an extraordinary one. If you set your mind to do something, you’ll achieve it,” she said.

At the time, the actress also talked about “Modern Family” and said that she’s extremely grateful that she’s part of such a successful show. “Happiness, I’ve learned, comes from within. I am happiest when I am doing something I love. And I love ‘Modern Family’ – it’s the best job I’ve had in my 20 years as an actress. It didn’t come easily or fast or free. It took me 14 years to land a gig like this,” she continued.

Hyland plays the role of Haley, the eldest daughter of Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) Dunphy in “Modern Family” Season 8.
