The Nasdaq and the Dow Jones industrials indexes briefly turned positive on Tuesday, while the benchmark S&P 500 pared losses, ahead of a report on consumer confidence that investors will scrutinize for further evidence of an economic rebound.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 2.87 points, or 0.03 percent, to 9,111.38. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dipped 0.47 points, or 0.05 percent, to 981.71.
