Cake is a popular dessert that you will find at most birthdays, weddings and baby showers, but that doesn’t mean it is only reserved for special occasions.

The history of cake can be traced back to ancient times and the origin of its name is said to be derived from the Old Norse word “kaka.” Over the centuries, cake has become so popular that it has received its own special day, Nov. 26.

This day should be celebrated by indulging in the special treat, and while the idea of making a homemade cake seems intimidating, it doesn’t have to be a hassle. It is also a bit more rewarding than using mix from a box.

Check out these six cake recipes that you should consider baking for National Cake Day 2017 below:

Do Nothing Cake

It doesn’t get much easier than the Do Nothing Cake, which, if you already guessed, requires minimal effort. A majority of the ingredients should be located in your kitchen with the exception of crushed pineapple and coconut. This easy dessert from Recipe of Today gives you the option of making your own icing, but if you have to run out to the store to buy some of the other ingredients, you may want to consider picking up your favorite topping and save yourself a few steps.

Healthy Carrot Cake

For all of you health conscious people out there, this one is for you. Even though National Cake Day is all about indulging in a tasty dessert, it doesn’t mean you have to feel guilty about ruining your diet. This recipe from A Sweet Pea Chef calls for grated carrots, unsweetened almond milk, Greek yogurt, raisins, baking soda, coconut oil and a few more household ingredients. Once in the oven, the cake takes around 25 minutes to bake. This will give you time to make your own frosting, which only requires greek yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla extract.

Butter Pecan Cake

This cake from Recipe of Today actually gives you the option to use store-bought frosting but does share the steps to make a homemade vanilla frosting. With simple ingredients, like baking powder, vanilla extract, flour, butter, salt, milk, sugar, pecans and eggs, this easy dish will be ready in less than 25 minutes.

White Chocolate Cake

Although this recipe may look difficult because it requires you to melt your own white chocolate, you can simply place the chocolate in the microwave to get the desired texture, just watch it carefully so it doesn’t overheat. Other than that, the ingredients are pretty basic requiring flour, sugar, baking powder, butter, salt, milk and vanilla extract. This recipe from The Kitchen is My Playground also gives you the option of making a two or three layer cake, however, the third layer will add an extra 10 minutes to your bake time.

Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Pound Cake

It’s hard to celebrate National Cake Day without paying respect to one of the classics: pound cake. For the most part, making this cake from Recipe of Today will be relatively easy with the exception of sifting flour and separating eggs. Other than that, it should be smooth sailing and you can probably even catch a movie while the cake bakes.

Quick Cinnamon Coffee Cake

This coffee cake from the Retro Housewife Goes Green can also double as a delicious breakfast so if you are up early on Sunday and aren’t sure what to eat, this is an option. This quick dessert, which requires basic ingredients like salt, milk, cinnamon, flour, baking powder and one egg, can be done in less than 40 minutes. It also offers you the option of creating your very own cream cheese icing. Just make sure you allow the cake to cool completely before adding the final touch.

Happy National Cake Day!
