The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council designated a day to celebrate hot dogs, leading to the National Hot Dog Day which is technically celebrated on the third Wednesday of July every year but there are times it is also held on other days as was the case last year when it was celebrated July 23.

Some fun facts about hot dogs include the place of their origin which is Frankfurt, Germany, around the year 1484. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, hot dog season begins from Memorial Day, and lasts until Labor Day — a period often considered the peak of the baseball season.

During hot dog season, nearly 20 billion hot dogs are consumed, which would technically mean more than 800 hot dogs are consumed per second. In the United States, National Hot Dog Day has been celebrated since the 1950’s.

So what exactly does a hot dog contain? It mainly contains pork, beef, chicken and turkey, or some might consist a combination of all these items. Other ingredients used to make it delicious include curing agents, water and spices, sugar, white pepper.

To celebrate this year's edition of National Hot Dog Day, many retailers are offering great deals and discounts on your favorite frankfurters, not just this Wednesday but for the entire month of July. Burger King: Their grilled dogs are just 79 cents all month long.

Circle K: From July 17 to 23 this place is offering $1 hot dogs at several locations.

Dog Haus: Purchase one hot dog they will give you the other for free.

Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers: At selected locations, the deals will last for a week. With a coupon, you could get one free hot dog or their roller grill menu item of your choice from July 19 to 26. One coupon is limited to one person per day. Some of their famous roller grill items include jalapeno cheese hot dogs and cheese smokies.

Sonic Drive-In: Limited to five hot dogs per person, this place is giving out all-American hot dogs and chili cheese coneys at $1. This is however, at selected locations only.

Little Joe's: With a purchase of an entree, you will get $1 hot dogs all day this Wednesday.

Pheasant Lanes: On the holiday of National Hot Dog Day you can enjoy $2 jumbo hot dogs at this restaurant.

Philly Pretzel Factory: Pretzel’s signature hot dogs are priced at just $1 a piece on Wednesday. To mark the special holiday the first 100 people to enter the restaurant this Wednesday will be eligible to $1 hot dogs every single day for the month of August. So what are you waiting for?

Hwy 55 Burgers : Hot dogs are 99 cents each at the Hwy 55 restaurants that are members of the My Hwy 55 Rewards program. It also applies to all guests who download the app for the restaurant. If you download the app, you will also get a free milkshake on Wednesday. However, this offer is limited to two hot dogs per guest.

The Steamie Weenie : They will offer $1 hot dogs the entire day on Wednesday.
