National Pie Day is celebrated on Jan. 23 every year, giving everyone an official reason to go out and indulge in their favorite type of pies — apple pies, key lime pies, pecan pies, pumpkin pies and more.

Pies have a long history, dating back to 1,300 B.C, when Egyptian bakers folded bread dough around nuts, honey and fruits — just like today’s tarts or galettes. To hold the pie together while cooking, the fillings were often used in reeds rather than dough. According to the American Pie Council, the practice of making pies was continued by the Greeks and Romans, who wrapped meat in a flour and water paste to bake pies.
