Japanese chip maker NEC Electronics Corp. said on Tuesday it began shipping a chip compatible with both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats in next-generation DVDs.

The company said the chips will go on sale for $84 and will begin shipping immediately.

NEC expects to sell 300,000 a month starting in April 2007.
