The Girl Scouts are ready to begin Girl Scout Cookie sale 2012, launching a new flavor in honor of the organization's anniversay.

Girl Scout cookie date more than 80 years back, and have been a vital part of the organization. This year the Girl Scouts are launching the new Savannah Smiles flavor, to join 10 others on the annual sale roster.

The bite-size Savannah Smiles cookies come with a dusting of confectioner's sugar and the taste of a lemony twist. The Girl Scouts describe the new cookie like this: Celebrate the anniversary of the Girl Scouts with these bite-sized, lemon-wedge cookies dusted in powdered sugar and bursting with lemon flavor. Enjoy these delightful treats, remember where Girl Scouts began...and smile.

The name of the new cookie -- Savannah Smiles -- was inspired by the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low.

Girl Scout Cookies had their earliest beginnings in the kitchens and ovens of our girl members, with mothers volunteering as technical advisers, according to the organization. The sale of cookies as a way to finance troop activities began as early as 1917, five years after Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouting in the United States. The earliest mention of a cookie sale found to date was that of the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, which baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project in December 1917.

While you haven't been able to try the Savannah Smiles cookie yet, you have likely had many of the other 10 flavors sold annually by the Girl Scouts. What's your favorite Girl Scout Cookie flavor?
