Police in New Zealand's northernmost city of Whangarei put a hospital and two schools in the area under lockdown after gunshots were fired in the area on Tuesday. The lockdown also closed traffic intersections in Whangarei.

After the shots were fired, the police found a vehicle with two men and a firearm, according to TVNZ, a local news network, and a third person who was injured. The police are currently questioning the three men, one of whom was taken to a hospital for treatment, local reports said.

Eyewitnesses had heard the gunshots and had called the police, according to 3 News, a local news network. A hospital official also said that nobody was allowed to enter the premises after 3:45 p.m. local time (9:45 p.m. EST), except for an ambulance.
