Symantec on Tuesday unveiled mobile security software that protects Smartphones from viruses and spam as customers e-mail, browse the web and access online banking.

The new software called Norton Smartphone Security provides a combination of Norton Anti-virus technology, a firewall and anti-spam software for messages sent via the Short Message Service (SMS). The software is compatible with Smartphones that run the Windows Mobile and Symbian operating systems.

The software will detect mobile viruses and protect users from accessing infected files by deleting spam messages and by securing inbound and outbound network traffic. The software runs in the background.

The software has been made available to the customers through Symantec's online store at a fee of $29.99.
