“Outlander” star Sam Heughan has emerged as the Radio Times TV Champion of 2015, thanks to over 16 million votes he received from his fans. The actor had to beat Ricky Gervais in the final round in order to win the award.

RadioTimes congratulated all the actors and their respective TV shows for being a part of this race, which was keenly watched by the fans. Heughan (Jamie) first emerged as the victor in the Sci-Fi Champion category, by beating Aidan Turner of “Poldark” and other actors competing in that category.

Heughan secured 58 percent of the votes in the final round against Geravis, who had emerged as the victor in the Comedy Champion category. Reacting to his victory, Heughan said that he was “very astonished” by the number of votes he got by his “dedicated and passionate” fans. The actor said that he was honored by the award and thanked the fans for their support.

“Many have no fingers left due to intense voting,” Heughan remarked. The actor also offered Gervais a chance to cameo in the “Outlander” TV series while talking about his victory on Twitter. Heughan asked his fellow contestant in a tweet to bring his own “skirt” and said that they would put a tartan wig on him for a scene. Gervais on the other hand was concerned about the hours of work he may have to put in.

While Heughan has won this award, his fellow cast member Caitriona Balfe (Claire) is in the race to win the Girl on Top 2015 award at EOnline. The voting for the current round closes on Wednesday and this has been described as a close race with some contestants having lost the previous round by a mere 20 votes.

Balfe has to beat Eliza Taylor of “The 100” in the next round to reach the finals. The other two contestants, who are also competing in this round, are Emily Bett Rickards of “Arrow” and Candice Patton of “The Flash.”

The cast and crew of “Outlander” are currently filming for Season 2. The next season will take the two main characters to France, where they will attempt to stop the Battle of Culloden.
