There might not be a better place in the world to spend New Year's Eve than Paris. And even if you can't truly be in the City of Light, you can follow along with the celebrations online.

If you're looking to keep up with the goings-on at different Parisian sites, this website has webcams for viewing a number of different locations, including the Champs-Élysées. EarthCam also has a camera set up with a view of the Eiffel Tower as well as spots all across the globe.

New Year's Eve is a time for celebration and Paris certainly provides numerous options for having a good time. In fact, there's a whole website dedicated to the myriad events, counting down the second until 2017.

The city will have increased security on New Year's Eve amid global security concerns and fears of terrorism. That's an unfortunate part of New Year's Eve that is not new to Paris. Last year, the city celebrated the New Year in the shadow of November attacks from the so-called Islamic State group that left 130 people dead. Folks across the city canceled events, fearful of too many people gathering in one place.

This year, security has been ramped up in Paris, as it has in many Western cities after a truck attack on a Berlin Christmas market this month killed 12 people and injured dozens more. It was an attack very similar to one France had seen this July in Nice, when a man drove a truck into a crowd on Bastille Day, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds more.

Paris has cancelled its usual fireworks show at the Eiffel Tower, but still expects some 600,000 people to gather on the Champs-Élysée to take in a lightshow, the Guardian reported. Dozens of streets are set to be closed around the area, with concrete barriers and large vehicles blocking of access points.
