A Class I recall was issued for Pilgrim’s Pride since more than 4.5 million pounds of frozen chicken patties “may be contaminated with plastic, wood, rubber, and metal,” U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Tuesday. The possbily affected foods were produced on various dates from Aug. 21, 2014, to March 1, 2016.

A Class I recall is described as the following by the FSIS: “This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” Customers are urged not to consume the Pilgrim’s Pride products included in the recall.

The issue arose after the company received several customer complaints about plastic in the chicken nuggets. FSIS was notified of the problem April 6. After an investigation and more customer complaints, it was discovered that more materials contaminated the product. The recall was expanded Tuesday.

To get a possible refund, contact Pilgrim's Pride at (800) 321-1470 or the USDA’s meat and poultry hotline at (888) 674-6854. A different way for customers to get their money back is to return the product to the store where it was purchased.

The company has not issued a statement about the recall.
