It looks like everyone’s favorite green ogre may be stomping out of the swamp and back onto the big screen! That’s right: “Puss in Boots” star Antonio Banderas hinted during his recent podcast interview with Empire that it’s quite possible Mike Myers' beloved character Shrek may appear in the forthcoming DreamWorks Animation film “Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves,” which is currently in production.

“I heard some rumors that Shrek may be coming back,” the 54-year-old actor teased, regarding the reprisal. “That would be great. Shrek doing a cameo in my movie! Yeah, I’d like that.” So would fans of the animated ogre, who last saw the lovable marsh monster in the 2010 flick “Shrek Forever After.”

“Nine Lives & 40 Thieves” will be a sequel to the 2011 Oscar-nominated “Shrek” spinoff “Puss in Boots,” which follows the action-packed storyline of Shrek and Donkey’s (Eddie Murphy) sword-wielding feline friend. Executive producer Guillermo del Toro revealed details about the upcoming flick to Collider in 2012, explaining that he wanted to “take Puss to a completely different land which is very exotic” in the second film, which is set to be released in 2018.

Due to the success of the ogre-less first “Puss in Boots” installment, which grossed over $554 million, del Toro stated that they were able to be a bit more imaginative with the second installment. “Getting the box office backup gives us a chance to be risky and creative with the next one,” he confirmed while discussing the exciting plot for the sequel.

Banderas divulged during his Empire interview that the innovative script for “Nine Lives & 40 Thieves” is currently being restructured. “We started… but that’s the process. A lot of people participate in the creation of the script and the story and the narrative, everything. And they include you! They take you to California. And you read the script with them, give them your ideas, and a couple of months later, you see a new script where everything has been touched up,” he explained.
