“Reign” is getting rocky for some of the French castle’s couples. And judging by the episode 19 synopsis, it looks like there is no light at the end of the troublesome tunnel.

Last time viewers left off, Mary’s half-brother James arrived at the castle to beg her to return to Scotland. After some careful consideration, Francis agreed to go with her. But that all changed when he discovered that James’ footman was in possession of gold coins. Following a little bit of torture and a small plea deal, Francis got the man to come clean -- and he revealed that he had been hired by the English to kill Mary because they want her brother on Scotland’s throne.

Mary didn’t take the threat seriously, though, which led Francis to take drastic measures to make sure his wife stayed safe. When she attempted to leave the castle at the end of the episode, Francis had her detained by the guards … and put in the tower. Needless to say, Mary was not happy with her husband.

Thanks to a promo video for episode 19, we know that Mary will be freed from the tower. But that doesn’t mean that her marriage is on the mend. When Mary’s uncle arrives with “devastating” news about her mother, the newlyweds become “torn between putting their own countries first or saving their marriage.”

“My mother is surrounded on all sides,” Mary tries to explain to Francis in the promo video.

“But the Duke of Guise?” he questions her. “Is he someone you can trust?”

Mary answers that the duke is her uncle and therefore can be trusted. But Queen Catherine doesn’t feel the same way.

“He is a vicious, self-serving killer,” Catherine tells Mary and Francis. And while Francis may believe his mother, Mary doesn’t.

“Coming from you, that’s a ringing endorsement,” Mary fires back at her mother-in-law.

Scotland’s not the only country with problems. Mad King Henry wants the English throne … immediately. But unfortunately that’s a plan that will only end in disaster.

“What have you done?” Francis asks his father in the promo.

“I can’t wait to see the look on Mary Tudor’s face when I claim the English throne for myself,” Henry responds, madness in his voice.

“We don’t have the strength,” Francis argues. “Our armies are spread too thin.”

But Henry won’t hear any of it. The king is so delusional that he thinks that they can’t lose. Francis promises him that not only will they lose, but thousands will also die.

As for Bash and Kenna news? The couple will “solidify their marriage and begin to trust one another.”
