The "Reign" Season 2 premiere is titled "The Plague." The show will return to the CW on October 2. CW

Royalty has returned. Filming for Season 2 of “Reign” is currently underway, but fans of the hit CW show don’t have to wait until the fall to find out what the French castle is up to. The CW has released the highly anticipated synopsis for the second season, and we’ve got the entire scoop to get you caught up.

According to the synopsis, the sophomore season of the period drama will pick up with Mary and Francis still on the French throne. However, the nation will be “burning” thanks to the spread of the plague. Despite Mary closing the gates behind Francis during the Season 1 finale, the disease will still make its way through the castle walls and take “thousands upon thousands of lives” across the country.

“From the ashes, powerful lords will rise, carrying out personal, religious and political vendettas, taking lives, and tearing at Mary and Francis’s commitment to each other, and their people,” the synopsis says.

But the lords and plague won’t be the only things about which Mary, Francis and the others must worry. Just like season 1, murder and betrayal will play a major role in the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to a “mysterious and deadly threat” that “snatches victims from village streets and castle corridors.” This threat will make its savage work look like a monster committed its crimes, “mythical creatures who are the subjects of nightmares, but who walk among us, doing the Devil’s bidding.”

As we previously reported, the Season 2 premiere of “Reign” is titled “The Plague.” Besides new trouble and obstacles to overcome, the CW show will also be introducing a handful of new characters. “Reign” viewers will be meeting Princess Claude, the never-before-seen daughter of Queen Catherine and King Henry; Narcisse, a dangerous yet “brilliant, sexual [and] fierce man who will meet his match in Queen Catherine; Conde, the mysterious “Prince of Blood"; and Prince Thomas, who “may be the next king of France sooner than he’d imagined.”

Season 2 of “Reign” will premiere on The CW at 9 p.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 2. Check out photos from the cast and crew as they returned to the set to begin filming:
