New Jersey, Delaware and California are among the 12 top states that are leading the U.S. in solar power, says a new report from the Environment America Research and Policy Center.

The report, published Tuesday, which highlights the solar boom across the country is titled “Lighting the Way, What We Can Learn from America’s Top 12 Solar States.”

“The sky’s the limit on solar energy,” said Rob Sargent, energy program director with Environment America. “The progress of these states should give us the confidence that we can do much more. Being a leader in pollution-free solar energy means setting big goals and backing them up with good policies.”

The report emphasized that it is not direct sunlight that makes the top states solar leaders, but their state and local governments' policies toward the development of the solar industry.
