Germany is marking the 50th anniversary of the erection of the Berlin Wall, which was constructed on August 13, 1961 by German Democratic Republic (GDR) of East Germany.

The Berlin Wall divided East and West Germany, cutting off West Berlin from East Germany and from East Berlin until November 10, 1989, when the reunification of the two German states was announced.
