‘Riverdale’
How will Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) deal with all of the problems coming their way in “Riverdale” Season 2? The CW

There’s going to be a big divide in “Riverdale” Season 2 not only between the South and North side of town, but also between Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse).

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said that the hearts of the Bughead shippers may be torn out when they learn of Betty and Jughead’s fates. “I can tell you, Jughead is definitely going to Southside High, which certainly makes it harder for him to avoid joining the Serpents. But Jughead goes on a pretty dark journey and that’s the tension in Betty and Jughead’s relationship,” he said.

Reinhart seconded Aguirre-Sacasa’s statements and added that Jughead and Betty will be like Romeo and Juliet. “You have to choose a side. So it causes a rift between the two and a big divide and they start to be pulled away from each other. They can’t see each other as much and that causes some Bughead problems that might tear some people’s hearts out,” she said.

But the actress stressed the fact that there has to be trouble in paradise because this is what happens in a show such as “Riverdale.” “This is ‘Riverdale’ and people die,” Reinhart concluded.

Meanwhile, Aguirre-Sacasa also spoke with TV Line to confirm that “Riverdale” Season 2 will pick up right where Season 1 left off. This means that it will still be winter in town when the show premieres next month.

“The tricky thing is we left off the season in the middle of winter, and we kind of pick up right after it. So the timeline is a little bit squishy. But I’ll tease this, and this is all I can say: We are going to do a holiday episode, but it’s probably not the holiday you imagine,” he said.

Aguirre-Sacasa also revealed that in Season 2, Betty will be at the heart of all of the darkness in “Riverdale.” “I would say by episode 4 and 5… We’re putting her through the fires like never before. I can’t say too much because there’s a couple of big twists, but Betty is absolutely at heart of the darkest story we’re telling this season,” he said.

“Riverdale” Season 2 will premiere on The CW on Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. EDT.
