Four hundred extra police officers have been deployed across Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo, amid a huge crime wave that threatens ahead of the St. Anthony’s Day holiday, the Brazilian version of Valentine’s Day.

State governor Geraldo Alckmin unveiled the police crackdown in the wake of a flurry of armed robberies in affluent bars and restaurants.

The additional cops will join the existing force of some 3,500 officers in the sprawling city of almost 20 million people.
