A Sydney metropolitan council has imposed another ban in smoking on restaurant areas and outdoor cafes.

Leichhardt Council passed a resolution last Tuesday to make alfresco vicinities free from smoke on 2011. This council covers a part of the inner western suburbs which is famous for its coffee-drinking culture.

This decision comes after the smoking ban in Bondi beach earlier this month led by the Waverly Council which will be effective on July this year.

We now call on all NSW Council to follow the footsteps of Leichhardt Council, said Tony Thirlwell, chief executive of National Heart Foundation, in a statement on Wednesday.

Leichhardt residents and visitors will now enjoy their coffee experience without choking due to second hand smoke.
