Gamers from the Super Nintendo era are in for a treat, as EA Games has re-released “Super Star Wars” on the PlayStation Network (PSN). This enhanced version of the classic SNES title was originally an exclusive bonus to those who purchased the “Star Wars Battlefront” PS4 bundle, but is now available to anyone with a PSN account.

According to the PlayStation Blog, this version of “Super Star Wars” has a number of new features that weren’t in the original SNES version. The game now has new save features, leaderboards, trophies and updated options for display and controls.

“Super Star Wars” loosely follows the storyline of the first “Star Wars” film and gives players the option to play as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca. The game is mostly a side-scrolling shooter, similar to “Contra,” with vehicle sections that add variety to the title.

This is the first time that “Super Star Wars” has been available on a console that wasn’t made by Nintendo. Aside from its original release in 1992, the game was also made available in 2009 through Nintendo’s Virtual Console feature, according to Pocket Gamer.

Many gamers of the Super Nintendo era consider the “Super Star Wars” games to be the best “Star Wars” titles on the classic platform. Two more “Super Star Wars” games were released and it will be interesting to see if they become available in the future.

Although “Super Star Wars” was originally part of a PS4 bundle of “Star Wars Battlefront,” the game is also playable on the PS Vita. Sony has confirmed that the title will support cross-play, so once the game is purchased through PSN it will be available on both platforms, assuming that a user owns both.

It should be noted that “Super Star Wars” was part of a digital game voucher that also featured “Star Wars Racer Revenge,” “Star Wars Bounty Hunter” and “Star Wars Jedi Starfighter.” These other games should be available soon, now that “Super Star Wars” is available for purchase.

Both “Super Star Wars” and “Star Wars Battlefront” are available now on the PS4. Meanwhile, the new film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be premiering sometime in December.
