The S&P 500 fell more than 2 percent and the other major indexes added slightly to losses in late trading on Wednesday, as euro-zone troubles and economic data kept investors on edge.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> lost 200.49 points, or 1.66 percent, to 11,875.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 24.05 points, or 1.87 percent, to 1,263.82, after hitting an intraday low at 1,261.90. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> slid 49.41 points, or 1.84 percent, to 2,629.31.
