Stocks rose on Monday, with the S&P 500 jumping 1 percent as hopes Europe was tackling its debt crisis combined with strong earnings as well as merger and acquisition activity and encouraging data from China.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 60.78 points, or 0.51 percent, to 11,869.57. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 11.83 points, or 0.96 percent, to 1,250.08. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 49.60 points, or 1.88 percent, to 2,687.06.
