The Springfield, MA tornado that touched down late Wednesday is serious. At least one person, who was hit by a fallen tree while in his car, has been killed, reported 22 News WWLP. The individual was driving down Main Street in West Springfield.

The tornado has also damaged multiple buildings, caused gas leaks, knocked down trees, overturned multiple cars, and inflicted serious injuries.

Stephen Frasier of the University of Massachusetts Amherst said although one to two tornados happen per year in Massachusetts, Wednesday's tornado was a pretty big system and uncharacteristic, reported MassLiveNews.

Currently, police, firefighters, and members of the National Guard have been called to help with the emergency response and search and rescue.

Governor Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency.
