The Dow and the S&P 500 briefly turned negative on Thursday, while the Nasdaq trimmed gains, as investors fretted about the likely fallout from Chrysler's bankruptcy filing and as shares of energy companies weighed.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 5.81 points, or 0.07 percent, at 8,191.54, off a session low at 8,185.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 1.33 points, or 0.15 percent, at 874.97, off a session low at 873.40. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 16.54 points, or 0.97 percent, at 1,728.48.
