In an apparent murder-suicide, a college student shot his roommate and friend multiple times before turning the gun on himself.

Matthew Bond Pfluger and Connor Patrick Shannon, both 24, attended Texas State University. They were found dead in a residence close to campus on Sunday morning by San Marcos Police Department, reports CBS Austin. A friend found them and called 911.

Pfluger reportedly shot Shannon multiple times inside the home and then tried to kill himself with a knife. When his attempt failed, he went into the backyard, where he shot himself in the head, authorities said.

For the people who live nearby and say they knew the men, they were in shock over what happened.

“Whenever we’d see each other, they’d wave and say hello," neighbor Garrett Grady said, reports ABC affiliate KVUE. "I still can’t believe it. They were such quiet people. They don’t really cause trouble, and then you find out they’re dead. I feel terrible for the parents and the families of the victims."

Authorities haven’t released a motive.
