In 2003, the Tolkien Society established Tolkien Reading Day to commemorate the fantasy author and his imaginative works. J. R. R. Tolkien, author of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, already has a celebration in his honor on his birthday, which falls on Jan. 3. To accommodate this, the society decided to use the day that marks the day of the destruction of the One Ring to focus on his popular books. Each year Tolkienists around the world gather on March 25 to attend readings, reenactments, lectures, talks and workshops to further the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
