Ending all speculations we can definitely say that Tom Cruise will play the lead in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, 'Rock of Ages’ for New Line Cinema and joining him will be Anne Hathaway who is in talks now with the studio.

Earlier reports had indicated that Gwyneth Paltrow was being considered for the role of a journalist who interviews the down and out rocker being played by Tom, but it seems the talks have fallen through.

The movie is being directed by Adam Shankman of Hairspray fame. Show creator Chris D'Arienzo has penned the adaptation with the help of Michael Arndt who earlier worked on Little Miss Sunshine.

The story centers on two people who meet at the Sunset Strip club ‘Rock of Ages’, fall in love and try to stay together amid '80s rock anthems. The love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The musical received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009.

Hathaway will play the journalist who is writing a revealing article on Tom Cruise's character, Stacee Jaxx. Alec Baldwin is slated to portray Dennis Dupree, a former rocker who runs the 'Rock of Ages' club while Mary J Blige is expected to play the owner of a strip club.

Filming begins in May.
