Just like the number of great actors and actresses that never won an Academy Award there are quite a few legendary filmmakers that were never honored with a golden statue. Citizen Kane may be considered one of the greatest movies ever made, yet Orson Welles was not awarded the Academy Award for Best Director. Alfred Hitchcock, the master of psychological thrillers also never won an Oscar. Here is a list of five legendary movie directors that never won an Academy Award.

Alfred Hitchcock
The British director and producer mastered suspense and psychological thriller movies. Some of his most famous movies include “Vertigo,” “Psycho” and “The Birds.” Even though he was nominated for an Academy Award six times he never won. Reuters

Orson Welles
