Toshiba Corp, Japan's largest chipmaker, would scale back research and development at its semiconductor segment, as well as the wider electronic device business, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The move would cut spending in the chip segment in half by fiscal 2010, while the electronic device segment as a whole will see R&D spend cut by 22 percent to 400 billion yen for fiscal 2009 and fiscal 2010 compared with prior two-year period, the daily said without citing a source.
