U.S. consumer sentiment fell slightly in July to 83.9, a survey released on Friday showed, from the final reading of 84.1 in June.

The preliminary reading of the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's on overall consumer sentiment for July fell by 0.2 points from June's final reading. The reading missed the consensus, which had been for a rise to 84.7.

The survey of about 500 consumers is a leading indicator of consumer spending and measures overall economic activity.
