No injuries have been reported. Stay where you are, indoors, until further notice. As a precautionary measure, all classes are cancelled today on the Kingston campus only."

The Kingston, R.I., campus of the University of Rhode Island is under lockdown Thursday after reports of a gunman roaming around an academic hall.

At around noon Thursday, URI’s Facebook page gave the following update on the lockdown.

“Update: We are continuing to investigate reports of a man with a gun in or around Chafee Hall on the Kingston Campus. Secure yourself indoors, stay there, and do not move about outside until further notice. Check the homepage for ongoing updates, www.uri.edu,” the message read.

A URI spokeswoman told the Providence Journal that students and staff have been notified about the lockdown and alleged gunman.

"We are sending alerts to all students and faculty to stay within their buildings," the spokeswoman told the paper.

A man with a gun was reported inside Chafee Hall, an academic and service building that has since been evacuated, the spokeswoman said.

The URI spokeswoman added that there were no reports of any shots being fired on the campus.
