Valentine's Day 2012 is around the corner, but the supposedly romantic holiday will be met by groans and sighs from many across the country. While single men and women swear off the day as commercial, opting intead to spend time with friends, men and women in couples will struggle to find that special someone an even more special gift.

According to one report, U.S. shoppers will spend an average $126 on their valentines this year and the National Retail Federation estimates the nation as a whole is expected to spend $17.6 billion.

As one of the biggest gift-giving holidays of the year, it's encouraging that consumers are still exhibiting the desire to spend on discretionary gift items, a strong indication our economy continues to move in the right direction, Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.--based group, told the Chicago Tribune.

While lovers will traditionally buy each other candy, flowers, dinner and jewelry in celebration of Valentine's Day, some will stray off the beaten path and test out funny, clever or more unique presents. Many of these gifts will prove to be catastrophic mistakes.
