A little more than a month remains until “The Vampire Diaries” returns to the CW! Fans of the hit series have been hungrily lapping up behind-the-scenes photos from the cast and crew on Facebook and Twitter, but now we have something a little more … the network has released some photos from the season 5 premiere!
The photos for episode 1, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” come courtesy of ET Online. The site teases that the season 5 premiere won’t pick up where viewers left off – with Elena and Damon enjoying their new relationship and Stefan buried six feet underwater -- but instead will start a few months after the insane season 4 finale.
So, what do the photos reveal? We break it down for you below:
In season 4, Bonnie died while trying to bring Jeremy back from the dead. Fortunately Elena’s brother can see ghosts and was able to figure out what happened to the Bennett witch … but the others don’t know her secret. Elena and company think she’s on a summer vacation with her family!
Did Bonnie figure out a way to revive herself? One photo from episode one seems to indicate she’s back with her friends and is heading to Whitmore College. However, we doubt she’ll make the crossover from the ghost world to the real world anytime soon. Instead, we believe she’s just watching fondly from the other side as Elena and Caroline move on with the next chapter in their life.

A second photo from ET Online shows Elena and Caroline looking around the Whitmore campus with awe while moving some of their stuff into the dorms. Who needs help moving in when you have vampire strength?

Caroline Is In Lecture Mode
Caroline is making the same face she makes every time someone expresses some kind of worry. She usually counters it with some sort of lecture on empowerment, and we assume that's what she’s doing with Elena in a third photo from “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Perhaps Elena is worried about leaving Damon behind?

Our First College Party
Elena may have crashed a college party last year with Damon, but the brunette vampire and Caroline appear to be attending their first frat party in the premiere. Dressed to impress in some nice summer dresses, the pair of vampires smile sweetly at a student who has no idea about their supernatural background. Perhaps the pair need an invite to a frat party?

Bonnie’s Never Alone
It can be lonely on the other side … but not for Bonnie. The Bennett witch will be taking advantage of Jeremy’s ghost abilities and using him to help her communicate with the living. In one photo, Jeremy is holding a cell phone, so we’re assuming he’s impersonating his dead friend to reassure everyone she’s okay. In a second photo, the two appear to be just acting like normal (living) friends.
The Gilberts Are Back Together
Jeremy may be back from the living, but the Gilberts can’t get back to the way things used to be … because Elena burned their house down in a fit of anger and despair. While Elena’s off at school, Jeremy will become the newest member of the Salvatore household.

“The Vampire Diaries” season 5 premieres on the CW on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. A special screening of its spinoff series, “The Originals,” will air at 9 p.m. before moving to its regular slot on Tuesdays.
