“The Vampire Diaries” midseason premiere is almost upon us! Season 6 of the hit CW show went on hiatus in early December, but the series is gearing up to return with episode 11 on Thursday, Jan. 22. So, what can fans expect when Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and the rest of the gang hit the screen?

According to the synopsis for episode 11, titled “Woke Up with a Monster,” Kai (Chris Wood) will still be in the picture wreaking havoc on the poor Mystic Falls crew. When we last left off in the midseason finale, Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) begged Alaric (Matt Davis) not to kill her psychotic brother, and instead let her regain her energy in order to fight him with magic. Jo wanted to give her siblings Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) a chance to live by merging with Kai and taking over as the leader of the Gemini witch coven – but Kai wasn’t going down without a fight. He sucked up the leftover Traveler magic and managed to get loose. The good news was that the Traveler magic no longer kept the vampires and other supernatural beings out of Mystic Falls – but the bad news was that Kai wanted payback. In the final moments of the episode, Kai cast an invisibility spell over Elena, preventing her from having a potential romantic reunion with Damon.

With the Traveler magic pulsing through him, Kai will be more powerful than ever. However, the midseason premiere will find Kai uncertain on how to “control his newly acquired magic,” and he will hold Elena captive as he figures it out. Fortunately for Elena, Damon will figure out that his pesky nemesis has her in his grasp. He’ll immediately try to rescue his beloved, but nothing is ever that easy on “The Vampire Diaries.” The synopsis teases that Damon will be forced to “rethink his strategy after an unexpected visitor throws a wrench into his plan.”

Damon’s not the only one who will have a problem with Kai in episode 11. Jo will be preparing for the merge ceremony … but can she beat her brother now that he has new power? While Jo may act strong, Liv and Luke will discover that when it comes to magic, she’s actually weak.

Elsewhere, Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) will return home after her stint in the hospital. But surprisingly Caroline (Candice Accola) won’t be at her mother’s side. Caroline and Stefan will travel to North Caroline to “search for a cure for her mother’s cancer.” But Stefan is keeping a secret from Caroline. Although he is accompanying her and acting as a support system, he has his own “intentions” for heading to North Caroline. Enzo (Michael Malarkey) will be onto the youngest Salvatore, and catch up with the pair in order to find out what Stefan is hiding.

Does Stefan’s trip to North Caroline have something to do with the mysterious REAL Sarah Salvatore? “Vampire Diaries” fans will find out when the Season 6 midseason premiere airs on The CW on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. EST.
