Nina Dobrev
"The Vampire Diaries" will lose star Nina Dobrev after Season 6, so who will the drama focus on in Season 7? CW

“The Vampire Diaries” is going to go through a major change at the end of its sixth season: Elena is leaving. Actress Nina Dobrev announced her departure from the show on Monday, saying her plan for Elena was always a "six season adventure." The good news is that executive producer Julie Plec and her writers have had time to come up with a plan. There are already a few things we know about the rest of Season 6 and how next season is going to go.

First, the show will have to find a way to write off Elena. That means the cure for vampirism that Bonnie (Kat Graham) gave Damon (Ian Somerhalder) may very well be taken by Elena. She could ride off into the sunset as a normal human, or she might die. After all, this is "The Vampire Diaries" and no one is safe. However, she isn’t the only one making an exit after Season 6.

Tyler (Michael Trevino) is departing as well. In the midst of Dobrev announcing her departure, it seems like Trevino has been overshadowed. The actor will also be leaving his character, Tyler Lockwood, who has been around since Season 1. However, his absence won’t be as permanent as Dobrev’s.

“Michael has been a beloved member of the ‘Vampire Diaries’ family since Day 1,” Plec said in a statement. “Even though he’s also going to be out in the world exploring new opportunities, we look forward to finding creative ways to make sure he and his character Tyler Lockwood always remain a part of the show.”

It seems Tyler will not die since Trevino will still make appearances as his schedule allows it. The actor is currently working on “Kingsman,” a new drama for ABC.

So who is left? Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley), of course. Without Elena, "The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 will focus even more on the Salvatore men. “We will miss Nina and the four hundred characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble,” Plec explained.

With their mother (Annie Wersching) back in town, it looks like “The Vampire Diaries” will become even more of a family drama. But that doesn’t mean the romance is over. Stefan and Caroline (Candice Accola) have been a major part of Season 6. The Steroline romance is finally starting, so we can definitely expect some drama from them.

Caroline has also been given more of her own storylines this season with the loss of her mother. She isn't just supporting her friends anymore. She has come into her own as a strong character, so it isn't surprising if she has even bigger storylines next year.

But then there is Damon. Elena is the love of his life, so he is bound to be heartbroken no matter how she is written off. However, her absence might clear the path for Bonnie and Damon to get together. The two have hated each other in seasons past, but after being locked in 1994 together, the couple developed a close bond. She even jumped into his arms as soon as she came home. Elena’s exit just might give Bamon shippers a reason to celebrate, but fans will probably have to wait until Season 7 to see if Damon can truly move on from the doppelganger.

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 6 returns to the CW on Thursday, April 16, at 8 p.m. EDT on the CW. What do you hope happens to the characters after Elena is gone? Sound off in the comments section below!
