Damon (Ian Somerhalder, left) might regret telling Stefan (Paul Wesley) to turn off his humanity when “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 returns in 2017. CW

“The Vampire Diaries” has ended for now, but the final stake hasn’t gone through the heart just yet! The CW drama wrapped up for the fall and will return in February. Fans don’t have to wait nearly two months to find out what’s happening when the show returns, though.

The fall finale ended with Stefan (Paul Wesley) agreeing to turn off his humanity for one year while serving Cade (Wolé Parks). He and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) went on the road, but Caroline (Candice King) may have found a way to turn Damon’s humanity back on or at least remind him or what he is losing. When he opened up Caroline’s Christmas gift to find Elena’s necklace, he ripped out Sybil’s (Nathalie Kelly) heart.

It doesn’t look like Sybil’s death will stick. In the promo video for the midseason premiere, she looks alive and irritated. Damon, however, isn’t doing so great. Stefan seems to drug him and lock him in some sort of hospital. Damon wants a chance to redeem himself, but Ripper Stefan isn’t really a second chances type of guy.

Stefan’s new deal will make it even more challenging for Caroline to save him. She insisted Alaric (Matt Davis) take the twins away from her to protect them while she finds a way to help her fiancé. King said that she is sure Caroline is checking in on the girls, but her onscreen journey will be more about Stefan.

“I’m sure there are opportunities for FaceTime, but in the series it’ll be more about Caroline needing to focus on Mystic Falls and finding and helping Stefan throughout this deal that he’s made,” King explained to E! Online. “And Alaric is also trying to figure out how to protect the girls, so everyone’s busy.”

She’ll be busy, but it seems like Caroline will still participate in Mystic Falls traditions. Executive producer Julie Plec revealed that the town’s beauty pageant is still going to happen, and some of our favorite characters will attend.

“I think I can finally admit defeat that we weren’t able to fit in a final decade dance before the series ends, which I’m very sad about,” Plec told TVLine. “But we do have Miss Mystic Falls coming up, and of course, our most famous dancing has been done there.”

The most memorable dance, however, included Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev), and it isn’t clear if that will happen again. While Dobrev is rumored to be making a return, nothing has been confirmed. The CW was in talks with the actress earlier this year, but they never revealed if an agreement was made. Even Somerhalder claims to be in the dark about Elena’s future.

“I don’t know. I have zero idea. As a producer, I do have a lot of information and then there’s a lot of information I don’t have,” Somerhalder told Variety earlier this month.

Fans will have to tune in to see what surprises the final season has in store. “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 returns Friday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
