Chelsea looked past an early own goal and reached third on the Premier League table Sunday in their 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.

Branislav Ivanovic put Chelsea ahead for good in the 55th minute with his fourth goal of the season, firing a right-footed shot at the top of the box off a corner from David Luiz.

Earlier in the 47th, Sunderland’s Matthew Kilgallon deflected a shot by Oscar after Fernando Torres streaked down field and made a smart pass. Oscar didn’t strike the ball well, but it still squeaked through off of Kilgallon.

The Blues fell behind before the half after an own goal by defender Cesar Azpilicueta in the 45th. The 23-year-old tried to block a Sunderland shot in front of the net off a corner, but ended up sticking in top of the net.

Chelsea moved up one spot in the EPL table, surpassing Tottenham, who tied Everton 2-2 on Sunday.

Only three of Chelsea’s 16 shots were on target, but none of Southerland’s eight attempts were on goal.

Frustration with the attack may have led to midfielder Craig Gardner’s yellow card in the 25th, and Danny Rose's in the 62nd.
