Liverpool’s preseason summer tour had a splendid start as the Reds defeated Indonesia 2-0 on Saturday in Jakarta.

Philippe Coutinho started the match off with a quick strike in the first 10 minutes of play, and Raheem Sterling provided a bookend goal in the 87th minute. It was the first game back for Reds star Steven Gerrard, as well as the debut for recent transfers Kolo Toure, Simon Mignolet, Luis Alberto, and Iago Aspas.

Clearly all had a solid impact on the match, but goalkeeper Mignolet might have had some extra pressure placed on his shoulders, considering hours before the match Liverpool had loaned eight-year netminder Pepe Reina to Napoli.

Mignolet performed stoically with a cleansheet in his first match donning a Reds kit.

Off a backwards heel pass from Jose Enrique on the right wing, Coutinho started the scoring by muscling past Indonesia’s back line, and firing a low strike to the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead.

The Brazilian international totaled three goals and five assists in Premier League play last season, and might have to take on more of a scoring role should Luis Suarez depart later this summer.

Sterling netted his goal into an open net after the Indonesia back line broke down in the final minutes. Jordan Ibe scorched down the baseline and lobbed a lead pass to Oussama Assaidi, who then scuttled it to Sterling for a 2-0 lead to end the game.

Liverpool will continue their summer tour with two more friendlys in Melbourne and Thailand next week.
