Liverpool stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal with four goals in the opening 20 minutes of their clash at Anfield. The home side came into the match in fourth place and having lost on each occasion they have taken on the top three sides this season. Yet, they set about Arsenal from the off and got immediate rich rewards against the dazed visitors.

The scoring began inside the first minute. From Steven Gerrard’s in-swinging free-kick, Martin Skrtel was just offside, but no flag went up. After a slight deflection at the near post, the ball came off the knee of the big Liverpool defender and, although it went straight at Wojciech Szczesny, the Arsenal goalkeeper couldn’t react quickly enough and it ricocheted off him and into the net.

The second goal was not long in coming, with Liverpool again showing why no side has scored more goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this season. This time from an out-swinging corner, Skrtel escaped the attentions of Laurent Koscielny and directed a fine header into the top corner.

Arsenal were stunned and Liverpool kept pouring forward. Daniel Sturridge and Kolo Toure missed great chances to get a third, while Luis Suarez also struck a post. Still, the next goal was not long in arriving. Luis Suarez put a low ball across the box, which either Sturridge or Raheem Sterling could have tapped in. The latter did and Liverpool weren’t done yet. Completing an incredible 20 minutes, Philippe Coutinho threaded a ball through for Sturridge, who finished clinically past Szczesny.
