The upcoming semifinal match of World Cup 2014 may have additional intrigue, as Brazil may be without superstar forward Neymar after an injury sustained in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Neymar was flattened in the 86th minute when he took a right knee to the back from Colombia defender Juan Zuniga. Throughout much of the match, Zuniga had made multiple rough challenges. He ended the match without a yellow card.

Neymar was taken off the field on a stretcher, and according to reports went straight to a hospital.

"It doesn't look good at the moment," said ESPN broadcaster Ian Darke, quoting a Brazilian media report after the match.

Head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, "I think it's going to be tough for him to play," in the upcoming match against Germany.

"There will be a series of exams because he was kneed on his lower back and he was crying of pain," Scolari said. "We don't have an idea, but I can guarantee it won't be easy for him to recover, based on what the doctor told us and the pain he's in. I don't know, I really don't know. I hope it's OK."

Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo didn't seem to have much control of the match. There were a total of 54 fouls called, and only three yellow cards were issued due to fouls. There was no red card given in the match, as well.

The possible absence of Neymar would be a major loss for Brazil against a very efficient German squad. Neymar has been one of the most active players in the Brazil attack, and often plays a crucial playmaking role. Throughout the tournament, Brazil has received inconsistent play from the midfield, making Neymar's presence all the more vital.

Germany and Brazil will meet on Tuesday, July 8.
