Overcoming serious injuries up and down their lineup, Real Madrid blasted past Celta Vigo with a 2-0 victory Saturday at the Bernabeu.

Gonzalo Higuan sailed a crossing shot from the left side of the area over Celta goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez to begin the scoring in the 12th minute for a 1-0 Los Blancos lead.

Madrid was shorthanded with full-backs Marcelo, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Coentrao out with injuries, but their attack made up for the lack of depth on defense.

In the second half, Celta’s Gustavo Cabral earned a yellow card after knocking down Mesut Ozil inside the box and Cristiano Ronaldo took the ensuing free kick for the goal and a 2-0 lead in the 67th.

Madrid might have made up for all the injuries to their defense with more physical play, drawing three of the five yellow cards in the match.
