Wayne Rooney produced a superb run and shot to help put Manchester United 1-0 up in the opening two minutes of a Group A Champions League match against Real Sociedad, with the ball eventually going into the net off of defender Inigo Martinez.
In a lightning start for the Premier League champions, Rooney picked the ball up on the left of the Sociedad area and showed fantastic skill to cut inside and out and past three defenders before firing a shot on goal as he lost his balance. The ball came back off the far post and caught Martinez completely unawares as he ungainly bundled the ball into his own net.
The tricky run from the soon-to-be 28-year-old was a glimpse of the type of devilment he burst onto the scene with as a teenager. After a contentious summer in which it is believed he wanted to move to Chelsea, Rooney has begun the season in impressive fashion. But the release of Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography on Tuesday cast a further cloud over the forward, with the former United boss reiterating his claim that Rooney had asked to leave the club.
The early goal will have been a major boost to Ferguson’s successor David Moyes. Under the former Everton boss, United have had a difficult start to the campaign
