Dancehall reggae star Vybz Kartel and three other men were sentenced to life in prison by a Jamaican judge on Thursday for the 2011 murder of an associate, the Associated Press reported. Judge Lennox Campbell ruled the tattooed Jamaican deejay must serve 35 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole. By that time, the entertainer would be 73.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, had been a dominant force in the reggae world for a decade but his career came to a halt after a jury convicted the 38-year-old for the murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams. Three other co-defendants, Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones and André St John, also received life sentences, according to All Hip Hop, after a jury found that Williams had been beaten to death in August 2011 over a business deal gone wrong.

The victim was asked to come to Kartel’s house to answer questions about two missing guns. The AP said his body was never found.

The break in the case came when police revealed during the 65-day murder trial -- one of the longest in Jamaican history -- that they had retrieved a text message from Kartel’s phone in which he wrote that Williams had been chopped into “mincemeat” so tiny his body would never be discovered.

Fans gathered outside the courthouse during Kartel’s sentencing. Some let out distressed yells after hearing Kartel was destined to spend the rest of his life behind bars. "Wickedness! They take away the 'world boss,'" a woman said, using one of Kartel's nicknames.

Many Twitter users were upset to hear Kartel had been sentenced to life, and took to the social media site to share their thoughts over the jury’s decision.
