U.S. stocks turned negative on Friday, giving up initial gains as a better-than-expected payrolls report did little to alleviate fears of a double-dip recession.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 36.33 points, or 0.32 percent, at 11,347.35. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dipped 7.76 points, or 0.65 percent, at 1,192.31. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 36.69 points, or 1.44 percent, at 2,519.70.
