Stocks opened higher on Tuesday as investors scoured the market for beaten-down shares after Wall Street skidded to a 12-year low a day earlier.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 40.14 points, or 0.56 percent, to 7,154.92. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 4.46 points, or 0.60 percent, to 747.79. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 9.64 points, or 0.69 percent, to 1,397.36.
