Wall Street gave up its slight gains on Friday as new orders for U.S. factory products tumbled much more than expected in May and a government report showed private hiring in the United States increased less than forecast.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 17.44 points, or 0.18 percent, to 9,715.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 1.88 points, or 0.18 percent, to 1,025.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 4.84 points, or 0.23 percent, to 2,096.52.
