U.S. stocks rose on Monday on speculation the Federal Reserve would signal potential steps to boost the sluggish economic recovery.

Trading was thin, however, as investors were wary of taking positions before the Fed's statement on Tuesday. A selloff in shares of Hewlett-Packard limited the Dow's gains.

Based on the latest figures, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 45.26 points, or 0.42 percent, to 10,698.82. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> added 6.12 points, or 0.55 percent, to 1,127.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 17.22 points, or 0.75 percent, to 2,305.69.
